Cathedral of St. Agatha

The Cathedral of St. Agatha, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of St. Agatha, is the main place of Catholic worship in Catania, mother church of the metropolitan archdiocese of the same name and seat of the parish of the same name.

The cathedral is dedicated to the virgin and martyr Saint Agatha, patron saint of the city of Catania, and is located in the city's historic center on the southeast side of Piazza del Duomo, in the Duomo di Catania or Terme Achilliane - Piano di San Filippo district. The cathedral preserves different styles: from Norman, to Baroque, to Neoclassicism. It is the only example of "ecclesia- munita" or "church-fortress" in Italy.
