Fish Market

The Pescheria (Piscarìa in the Sicilian language) is the ancient fish market in the city of Catania and is included in the tourist route because of the folklore content of passing among the fishmongers' stalls.

Only by trying this experience can one realize how picturesque this market can be that can only be compared in Palermo's twin market of Vucciria: the market is always crowded and the incessant hubbub (la vuciata) of vendors creates an Arab souk-like background and one can breathe in the typical atmosphere of a medina.

The stalls have been located since the early nineteenth century in the tunnel dug in the sixteenth century under the Palace of the Seminary of the Clerics and the walls of Charles V, in front of the Arches of the Navy, once immersed in the waters of the fishing port below, now filled in and turned into public green, in Piazza Alonzo di Benedetto and in Piazza Pardo, between the districts "Duomo di Catania or Terme Achilliane - Piano di San Filippo" and "Murorotto or Pozzo di Gammazita - Terme dell'Indirizzo," with preponderance in the former between the two.
